How can you tell if a car has an N14 or an N18 engine fitted?

Hi guys, basically as the title suggests. I'm going to be buying a Cooper JCW in the new year and basically want to know if there is an easy way to tell what engine is fitted to the car. Is it as simple as popping the bonnet and being able to tell straight away if it's an N14 or an N18 or would it be on the V5??

I'm 100% new to owning a mini so I'm trying to learn all this before I spend any money.

I test-drove one when they first came out in about 2002 with the view to buying but it was a little on the small side at the time so I bought a Golf Mk4 R32 instead. I've still got the Mini bug from driving one that day so I'm on the hunt again, better late than never, hey.

Here are a couple of cars for examples, can anyone tell what variant engine be fitted to these

N18 was fitted to R56 Cooper S from 2010 and JCW from 2012.

Both the ads in your post are N18

Hi ok cheers for that :). So it's basically based on the date/reg the car was registered. A JCW before 2012 would have the N14 engine.

Do you know or does anyone know if there is a way to 100% double check what engine is fitted? A car might have been manufactured in 2011 but registered in 2012 so would have the N14 engine, possibly?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but this is all new to me, i'm still trying to figure shiz out.

My 61 plate JCW has a N14, a 12 plate JCW has a N18. they do look different, the coilpacks on the n18 are diagonally placed, as the N14 are all straight.

Someone can correct me if im wrong though
Ok cheers for that info :). That's the kind of thing i'm looking for. I really don't want to travel across the country to look at a car only to find out it's not the one i'm looking for. To me, most of these car's look exactly the same on the outside so this info is really handy, cheers Weltz!

Cheers guys, thank you for all your help and info!

Thank you for that picture of the engines side by side, there's deffo a difference isn't there.

There's a handful of cars I've seen and a few that are borderline between the 2 engines changing over so all that info helps me a lot [emoji106][emoji106]. It just comes down to spec on the cars now.
