Well I picked up a used cooper s r56 auto today that I admittedly got very cheap and hence am expecting some possible issues (fingers crossed not too many!) did a 300 mile drive up the motorway and have noticed an odd sound that would love other thoughts on...

I noticed this sound that is whining / droning away - once I got up to speed - say over 50. it was in a pattern - as though its on for 2 seconds then off then on for 2 seconds constantly. I also noticed some vibrations in the accelerator pedal that matched the sound in timing. Could this be wheel bearings? I thought it seemed odd in its pattern and was thinking that wheel bearing would be a constant sound rather than on / off.

Here is the sound to have a listen too, (link to the sound file for a listen)

Any thoughts much appreciated.
