tweedbean's Chili Red Clubman Cooper S - That N14 Life

So where do I begin, well most of you know after my last Clubman, I swore never to get another 2nd gen mini due to the N14 engine issues I suffered with that one; I think it went through 6 timing chain tensioners and a top end rebuild, luckily all under warranty. However in the last 6 months, especially after the Lohen dyno day I had my head turned by all the the 2nd gens making power and looking spot on. Since I sold my JCW clubby, I have always said I will have another in the future, and I will also do the same with an F56 at some point. Since I owned my old Clubman, a lot has changed in terms of modding the 2nd gen engines, especially with Milly's working his magic on a number of serious builds making serious power and touch wood, not going pop every 5 mins.

Also for those that know me well, we have been going through some tough times at home with my fiancés health, fingers crossed she is coming out the other side of that now as she is a fighter. And its times like this that force you to take a different perspective on life, we no longer hold back on the things we want to do, hence the Mustang and now a Clubby.

The search Initially I was torn between a Coupe or Clubman, however going out in Oli's Orranje clubman, my mind was made up. Then came finding one, I would like to have started out with a spotless fJCW, which are sitting around the 10k mark, but I know with the plans I have in my head it would be pointless as I will be ripping it apart and changing most things that make it a JCW, just like I did with my R53. I have bidded on a few Clubmans on ebay over the last week but missed out as the prices went to high for what they were. So I took another look across all the selling platforms and found this one on autotrader.

So off I went to Leeds yesterday to collect a car I hadn't seen in the flesh. Two hours later and a quick test drive and the deal was done. It was one of those small back street dealer who knew nothing about the car and on the test drive I noticed I was playing fuel light bingo as it was on 4 dashes. Time for the journey home and it wouldn't be a cheap N14 without a few warning lights, TPMS due to the s Spokes, the service light came on, which is fine and can be reset as I will do that myself. Finally the rear pads also went through the wear sensor after some spirited driving, again not an issues as all on the list to change/upgrade/replace. So I made it home in one piece with a new project

Interior wise the car is absolutely spotless, especially for the miles its done and just needs a quick clean before most of the bits come out to sell on, anyone want a half leather clubman interior ;)

Exterior wise is another story, there is a little ding or mark on most panels, however I didnt expect it to be perfect as it was so cheap and its 10 years old. Going to give the car a clean and polish to see what state the paint is really in, but again this was all on the list of things to sort anyway so doesn't put me off, it may stay red, it may go another wild colour, I'm not that far down my planning yet.

Engine wise the bay is dusty which is a good sign it has been messed with and steamed cleaned to hide something. Not seen much from the engine other than tickover seems to be really quite compared to other R56's I have heard, which hopefully is good sign. I filled it with some decent fuel as it was on 4 dashes when I collected it, I didn't know a mini could go to 4 dashes, I have only ever seen 3 so it must have been nearly dry. I'm going to check fluids etc later today and get under the car to see if any major leaks but couldn't spot anything on the forecourt yesterday. Felt quite peppy, I forgot what a difference the sport button makes. Its done 120k so hopefully its had the usual bits done to get it that far such as timing chain, clutch, HPFP, again not bothered by mileage as I will be renewing or upgrade most wear and tear parts including eventually forging the engine. Time will tell with this engine but its reached 120k so it cant be as bad as my previous fJCW that went bang twice with only 30k on the clock. Very little paper work with the car so no receipt for previous work. I am not sure if a dealer can tell me whats be done under warranty over the years, I will have to ask.

Current Spec its a 2008 Mini Cooper S N14, 120k on the clock, Chilli red with a chilli pack, manual and thats about it. Oh and it has S Spokes which aren't the original wheels but again this doesn't really matter as long as its rolling for now. And yes the dutty toilet silver roof will be going, unless I paint it thunder grey and turn it into a GP2 inspired clubman :w00t:

Plans This will be a slow burner project until the wedding is out the way next June, but theres plenty I can do to sort all the small things right now and I will be stripping out the bits I dont want/need to make way for a few bits, first mod will be coming 19th August :) courtesy of Adam. All the usual bits like coilovers etc will happen at some point.

Time for some pictures, not the prettiest right now but I will get there with it:

Welcome back to the clubman side! Glad oli pushed hard enough at curbs to tempt you back!

GP2 style was an idea I had when I was looking for cheap clubman! it’s a smart colour and would look wicked on the clubby

He certainly did, its good to be back.

Lots of ideas in my head right now, not going to settle on anything for a while. I also liked the challenge clubby that came out years ago, bright green. Will be plenty of playing around with photoshop at some point to help give me a target to work towards.

Got a couple of jobs done between meetings today.

Looks like the previous owner put the car through a car wash as the aerial was destroyed and held together with electrical tape. Luckily I had a spare one on the shelf in the garage, much tidier and the radio reception is fine:

Gave the engine bay a good scrub as I didnt have the time to do the whole car:

Well this week I have been trying to see if I can claim on the 12 year paint warranty for all the paint issues (Bubbles and lacquer peel) on most panels. Unfortunately after positive conversations, the first owner of this car has let me down. Although they had the TLC pack they only did the first two services at Mini then never bothered again, Mini have said they would do it if there are 4 stamps  It was nice to think I could possibly get it done for free, but not too disappointed as I bought the car with the intention to paint the whole lot anyway.

So as now there is no chance of them fixing it, I can begin stripping off the bits I dont want, just in the process of pulling the seats and bonnet scoop. Next up are the front seats, side skirts and front bumper. All these bits are up for sale and will add to the pot for the respray.

Also decided to de-badge the rear end and like my R53, I will get the holes filled in on the bonnet so I can de-badge that as well, try to decide if I also lose the rear wipers and get those holes welded up for a clean back end, we all like a clean back end :tongue_smilie:

As its a no from Mini RE free respray, more parts are coming off the car. No more interior, front bumper or side skirts, its looking sorry for itself on the drive right now:

Time for some photoshops to decide on a colour for the car.

^^ excellent suggestion!

Ultraviolet from the GT3 RS could also be a nice purple, next to the R53. Or Lava Orange. Or Maritim Blue. Or Rubystone Red. Or or or...

I'd love to do a mini race wagon in Ferrari TDF blue with a black roof and tan leather. Also with the TDF stripes painted on the bonnet etc.

Battleship / Primer is so played out. I saw a stock Hyundai in it in town last week...

Red always looks good esp with a black roof on the Gen2.
