Too much engine oil.

11481 Views 30 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  Wilbo
I've had a bit of an issue and am quite worried... I did an oil check the other week and there was no oil whatsoever on the dipstick (not too worried since I rarely drive the car), so I bought a 4 litre bottle of oil to fill it up.

Being rather clumsy and with little thought I just poured the whole 4 litres into the engine and am worried I have put too much oil in. If I check the dipstick, the whole plastic orange tip has oil on it (so a good 1.5cm above the actual measurement lines on the dipstick).

I took the car for a quick spin and it sounds / drives fine however am still rather concerned and have now gone from too little oil to too much.

Hope someone with some technical knowledge could guide me? Thanks

Is there a quick way to do it.. I don't have a ramp and don't want to undo a bolt and get a face full of oil! :p
you can buy a pump from screwfix for this job

You're going to have to get underneath and drain some out that way im afraid, if your careful you wont get covered in oil  .
Its a bit of bastard to drain oil and stop it half way. Just gotta realize your going to get covered haha. Better off draining too much and having to put more in, than draining a bit and having to do it again haha.

Just a little hint, generally from Min to max on the dipstick on pretty much all cars is 1lt.

Jack up, undo the bolt a little bit, then unscrew it by hand slowly, as oil starts to drip out, leave it for a while. Oil will drain without the bolt being fully removed. Its fairly simple. Then re tighten.

Its not rocket science, you may get some oil on your hand, but if your worried about getting a little dirty then you need to get bigger balls
I'm guessing from the dipstick it has about 2litres too much now... would it be okay to drive it a few miles down to a garage or would you really not recommend me even starting it?
i wouldnt drive it

Dont go no where in it... get down to screwfix an buy that pump alski mentions... stick it in the dip stick hole and pump it out...

If you dont your in for trouble eventually.

If this was me tho id drain the lot and refil witht he correct amount.
I wonder if the AA will come and drain it?
man up n drain it yourself...
Only got a jack.. I don't consider it particularly safe getting under the car with 1 or 2 jacks and nothing solid..
Before you do so, however, just ensure you're on a flat surface while checking the dipstick.

4 litres probably is too much, but it depends how little was in there before

Use your initiative, park half on a nice big kerb and you'll be able to get under the to the drain plug, or get some house bricks under the front wheels and lower the can onto them, so the weight of the cat isnt on the jack.
If you couldnt put the right amount of oil in I wouldnt drain it, call the AA.

Come to think about it, your right,
