Hi,

I recently purchased a 2012 Mini JCW. I've noticed that whilst indicating the handbrake light flashes. This occurs regardless of whether the car is being driven or just sat on the drive.

I'm going to speak to the garage, but wanted to know if anyone on here has heard of this fault in case I get fobbed off by the dealer.

I've checked obvious things like brake fluid level and the cars own on board computer 'check' feature.

To clarify, when you indicate, the handbrake light flashes the same way the indicators do? and turn off when you stop indicating... if so, this is a wiring issue. No idea if this isn't the case, as the on board computer will normally tell you if theres an issue... as it does EVERY time I try and put an LED red bulb in the rear fog light holder.

That's correct. Flashes same speed and interval as the indicators. The actual brightness of the handbrake symbol is dimmer than it is with the brake light on, which I why I never noticed it during the day.

It's going back to the dealer that I bought it from and they are taking it to an independent BMW/Mini specialist.

Thats the strangest thing!

It must be a coding issue which they can fix with their computers.

Car back from independent. They cannot diagnose the fault, cost to replace instrument cluster is ~£500. Basically got to live with the problem.

Just an update on this in case others ever experience the same fault.

The car has spent the last 3 days @ Dick Lovett Mini dealer in Bristol for 'diagnostics'. Basically, they've plugged a computer into the car and can't see any error codes, therefore they can't fix a problem unless the computer tells them what it is.

I can't help you with specifics but I do know that the handbrake switch on R56's is the same part on R53's & 50's & many other BMW's. It's one of those generic no need to update parts you find commonly across ranges of cars. Certainly worth pulling the handbrake gaiter & inspecting the wiring for frays & grounding etc. see if there's any bearing on an odd problem. Good luck.

Yikes my 2012 R60 is showing the same symptoms!

Local garage want to replace the instrument cluster, I'm thinking it's more of a wiring issue. ?‍♂

Same problem only it started when we started using the 13 pin socket for trailer lights. Wondered if that could be the wiring fault. As far as I can tell most R60s were bike rack prepped wiring wise. Even if you didn't order bike rack prep. I intend to smother the socket in WD40 and see if it clears up.

I just want to let everyone know that I also had this problem with my December 2010 mini copper d. this suddenly came up after driving back home after work. after a lot of cursing and a visit to the garage they said they didn't have time for a thorough diagnosis. they suggested that I come back in a month when they could schedule more time. and after a heavy rain storm it was very wet on the road. and I gave it a little too much throttle and after the intervention of traction control the car shook a little bit. and suddenly it stopped.

T.L.T.R. I accelerate quickly and the problem stopped?
