So I got my replacement home: late '05 Facelift, AstroBlack with black leather and black roof lining, and sunroof, on 52k miles.

Nice 7hour journey from London to Hollyhead, and then the ferry to Dublin.

First job is to get it on Irish plates then change over aero kit, coilovers, and replace upper motor mount.

Shame your R50 died mate, that was coming along nicely.
But I'm sure the R53 will turn out just as nice, black roof lining? didn't even realise that was a thing I want one!

Yeah neither did I until I sat into the new S. Actually the best thing inside is the door arm rests stick out further so its a lot comfier to sit into. The clock pisses me off though - its on the speedo now instead of above the rear view mirror, keep forgetting.

Re. the R50 dying, fairly sure it was oil from the induction filter messing with the throttle body sensor which fecked the CVT transmission. Probably a cheaper fix with a manual gearbox. Will only use paper filters in R53.

January Update:

December = Payed the Vehicle Registration Tax to change to Irish plates. (interesting its an illegal tax under EU rules, EU fine Irl every year for doing this but they make more off the tax money than the cost of the fine anyway) - cost me €700+

December = Fitetd Resonated Milltek Cat Back, couple with the Janspeed Mani and Sport Cat.

December = NCT. The Irish version of an MOT. Inetrestingly the car passed the MOT 1000miles ago but failed the NCT. So there you go, much stricter rules here. It failed the front rear wishbone bushes and emissions.

So Plans:

Januray/Feb = I'm going to order ALL the bushes and mounts from Lohen, and do the chassis in one go and get coilovers set up properly. And if funds allow fabricate a TomCat from the original manifold before retesting the car.

Feb/March = Paint and Fit full aero kit.

We had dry weather for once, so finally got time to do a wiper delete using Jack's brilliant 'How To' http://www.minitorque.com/forum/f275/how-rear-wiper-delete-20140/ and a blanking insert from KillAllWipers. Wrapped the pipe in bublewrap so it wouldn't make a metal on metal sound when pushed out of the way/

Also started installing my JCW collection, need to get my hands on a Cylinder Head. Interestingly there was no 1.6 litre logo underneath the old enging plate like there was on my R50.

Test fitting, I ran out of daylight and busted one of the torque screws on the intercooler cover, so going to have to replace the top-left (long one) later in the week, when I also hope to install the JCW airbox.

Back from Mechanics

20180308_234425(0) by Ross R50, on Flickr

So got the R53 back from the mechanics yesterday with a bit of an eye watering bill but a lot of stuff completed in one go. Very happy with the results and would 100% recomend Valdas of Motor Confidence to any Irish MT'ers.

Photos to follow, the following was completed:

Installations:
  • Installed Upper + Lower Vibratech Engine Mounts (replaced leaking upper mount)
  • Installed Powerflex Gearbox Bush
  • Installed Powerflex Front Wishbone Rear Bush
  • Installed Front LHS Wheel Bearing
  • Set Up BC Coilovers, Custom cuts to front top mounts, drilled holes for rear extenders
  • Aligned
  • Installed JCW AirBox, with new ITG Filter, custom cut rear panel, de-flapped
  • JCW injection cover

Service:
  • Oil Service
  • Inspection 1

Fixed the following Issues
  • Rocker Cover Gasket with new bolts and bushes
  • New Lamda Sensor to the pre-cat
  • Straightened Milltek Exhaust
  • Replace cracked hose feeding into airbox.
So €1400 price isn't half bad for the amount of stuff done. Cars on 55k miles now and driving like a dream. No annoying vibrations from the Vibratech mounts and lots more go-kart feel.

Update 25th March

Update - Doing Small Bits:

So last weekend was the first warm day of the year, so spent the morning doing small bits to the car:

  • White LEDs front sidelights to match the Xenons
  • Chrome Bulb Side Indicators to remove the fried egg look
  • LED rear number plate lights
  • Fresh rear plate: white EU flag, black EU border removed, County name 'as gaeilge' removed
  • Topped Up Power Steering Fluid
  • Passed NCT (Visual insepction front side lights and PAS fluid)
  • Gave it a wash!
Next up on the to do list: Aero Kit fitting :tongue_smilie: Finally! I'm not running sideskirts at the moment which looks gick.
I'll be fitting full aero kit including spoiler with fresh newly ordered plastic inserts (lower/middle/upper grilles/number pate mount and those tiny plastics inserts for the side skirts. I'm going to colour code the grille lips (like tweedbeans R53). After that I'm thinking of swapping the 18" alloys for some 16s - most likely Rota RBs in black/chrome.

  • Fiited JCW Badges (well everything bar the cylinder head is JCW at this stage!)

Short Term List (for my own reference):
Get coilovers adjusted, lower 20-30mm
Install OMP Lower Brace
Front Plate needs to be double sided mounted instead of screw fixed

Long Term List:
15% Pulley
TomCat the Janspeed manifold
Brakes, JCW Brembos if I keep the R95s
Heated Recaros (£!)
Rota RBs in 16 or 17 if I cant live with the 18s anymore.

Nice progress with that Ross-you bought it almost exactly the same time as I got mine
I really wanted an Astro black one,but I got fed up of looking for a decent one and went for my black2 instead
What a pain in the arse to keep clean lol

Bahaha - 15 years of Irish winters with a black2 cooper - I feel your pain. In the end I just routinely put it through the local auto-carwash thing. Probably scratched it up a bit but it looked better that way than constantly being mucky
