Ross' Black R50 JCW

Capture3 by Ross R50, on Flickr

Hi all, this is my 2002 R50 from Dublin that I've owned since 2006. It's more of a survival build than a track or show build, as I've almost parted with it a number of times! I'm the second owner having imported it from Park Lane on 15000miles.

Recently I almost traded it in for scrap to lease a BMW i3...then changed my mind and invested the money in parts instead!blahblahblahblahblah I've been lurking on MT for years so I though its about time for a project thread.

So this project is more about future proofing a mini for long-term keeps. Currently on 143000 miles - oh and it has a CVT

Completed:
  • JCW Sound Kit (Exhaust and JCW R50 AirBox - Was hard to find)
  • JCW R95s, (Heavy 18in I know - but I like them, blame Keano's car!)
  • JCW Aero Kit
  • JCW Spoiler
  • Debadge Rear and remove aero kit stickers
  • Flush Wiper Delete
  • Alta 2in Stubby
  • LaminX Rear Lights + Buy Second Clean Set of Lights for NCT/MOT (Green Bulbs DO NOT work!)
  • Fresh Plates with double sided tape - (surprisingly the best aesthetic change I've made to the car)
  • Paint Interior Black + Chrome Dials
  • Fit tan mats to match the leather
  • Poly Engine + Gearbox Mounts
  • OMP Upper Strut Brace
  • MSD CoilPack + Iridium Sparks
  • Canton Header Tank + Stant Cap
  • M7 Thermostat
  • Pipercross Panel in JCW airbox - (superceeded)
  • Philips Silver Bulbs for front indicators
  • SprintBooster
  • PowerfulUK LED Rear Lights
  • Pipercross Viper Intake
  • Janspeed Mani + Sports Cat
  • BC Coilovers - Thank You MT Group Buy!
  • 15mm H+R spacers on each corner
  • Body Coloured Boot Handle Ordered - (Cosmos Black 303)
Maintenance Completed: (For My Records)
  • NCT Nov 2016 - New CV Boots
  • NCT Nov 2016 - LHS Headlight Motor
  • Dec 2017 - New Tyre - Front RHS
  • Jan 2017 - Coolant System Bleed
  • March 2017 - New Timing Chain @142K
  • May 25 2017 - Added 1Ltr Castrol 5W30, Topped Up Coolant
  • June 17 2017 - Helicoiled No.2 + Replaced Denso Spark Plus for Stock Spec NGKs
Parts Bought:
  • Fresh JCW Grilles from Oranje - Old ones are tired looking
Parts For Sale
  • Pre-Facelift Rear Lights - with LaminX, and underneath are the rear white centre bulbs
  • Facelift Rear Lights - ready for a joey-mod
  • JCW Sound Kit Air Box - with Trumpet, PiperCross Panel, and JCW R53 Airbox Badge
2017 To Do List:
  • Replace Glovebox (It opens randomly - has comic timing though!)
  • Tune Via O'Learys (Irish Mini Specialist)
2018 To Do List
  • JCW Front Brakes
  • Get a Second Set of Winter Alloys in 16in - Maybe Enkies

If I fix paint defects and replace for smaller alloys, I might go a different route with the cars look, maybe like below but with white r90s; any thoughts?

17.05.2017: JCW Sound Kit Time:

Finally found a sound kit - I've a penchant for JCW things. Anyway The airbox comes with a snorkel up to the windscreen vents. I removed the filter from that which gave better airflow. Also found an R53 airbox badge to make things shinier.

I want to fit an OMP strut brace which would clash with the snorkel so I've bought a pipercross panel and a revotec cold air feed kit which will hopefully give better flow.

that exhaust is as rare as they come!

Looking good bud!
For a good reason, it adds no power and sounds ok at best. Most of us with Coopers went with Play MINI's system. I test drove the sound kit when it came out and was shocked how dull it sounded. K&N and a play mini on my Cooper sounded a lot nicer.

It should solve some of the issues, watch out for the internals rusting out though as its happened to a few cars back in the day. Its an off the shelf rear box from Birchills who made all the JCW systems.

Interesting - thanks for the heads up...mine sounds nothing like any of the other youtube sound kits, hoping its the oem manifold and not the back box.

22.05.2017: Update - OMP + Pipercross fitted tonight.
I didnt expect much but the strut brace has made a huge difference, everythings much steadier and some of the vibrations from my poly bushes are gone.
Pipercross is much friendlier to the CVT box, much smoother and more fun to drive.
I added a fresh R53 JCW airbox badge for an extra 1bhp, then promptly smudged the superglue over everything .probably -1bhp now!

Need to route a tube up to the cowl area now, the brace clashes with the JCW trumpet section:

Took it out for a little hoon/scientific testing afterwards and came across a tonne of classic minis convoying on the way back to ferrys from the Int Mini Meeting on west coast of Ireland!:thumbup1:

Ehrm, I doubt the filter makes a difference, as you are basically running it without a filter with that extra top tube disconnected.

Ah yeah I hear you. Was discussing this with with NickBMW and he told me not to bother with Viper or cone so thats why I've stuck with the sound kit one.
It is a difference in comparison to the old crap filter that came out though.

No, I mean you are literally sucking unfiltered air into the engine this way!
Maybe you're right as you've more experience with an R50 than me; but IMO its just sucking in warmer air from the engine bay, previously with the trumpet it sucked in cooler air from the rear cowl area. Now there was a tiny filter at the top of the trumpet but effectively thats two filters in a row, so I took that out.

Martijn, whilst I'm annoying you - what was your best bang for buck when you were modifying your original R50 build?
