So my 52 plate R53 has been sounding like a diesel for a while, ticking loudly etc. All signs pointed to the chain tensioner so I replaced that this morning, only for the ticking to come back possibly louder. The tensioner I replaced wasn’t seized all the way in or out, and to be honest it only felt a little stiffer than the new one, so I’m not sure that was the problem in the first place. Any ideas where to go next with this? Chain guides?

I think you need to look at the guides perhaps. Did you fit the tensioner extended?

I had the same issue but first did the supercharger and then the chain tensioner AND chain assembly which seems to have sorted it. The chain was apparently stretched. I do have issues with emissions now though so will be looking at the exhaust next.
