R53 idling fluctuations at stand still

My R53 has developed a new gremlin.

The past month or so Iv noticed when the car idles at stand still for more than 5 minutes or so the revs start fluctuating on the verge of cutting out and then picks itself back up again and down /up etc Temperature gauge is always at half when it's at temperature and the fan is working ( even though Iv only heard it once with the air temp still being pretty cold ) if I rev the car it settles back to normal . It's almost like the car Is running out of fuel . Its had a recent full service including fuel filter .

There's no issues when the car is driving it just seems to be at idle for anytime over 5/10mins waiting for work with the heaters on mainly . I'm abit concerned as its intermittent but probably happening more often in the same situations and I really need it reliable .

Any ideas ?

Wouldn’t a vacuum leak be consistent? This is intermittent and is in sync with when the breather is activated.

Planning on lifting the mini tonight (it’s 7:30am here in Darwin, Australia) to get a look at the vapour canister and hose between.

Great to get interest straight away!

Will keep people posted.

It's not a fault, it's fumes from the tank being released into the intake by the evap solenoid. The warmer the weather, the more frequent it'll be

And I’m in Darwin, 35 degrees C at 85% humidity.

I removed the rear drivers side wheel and arch to inspect the vapor canister - from what I can see;

- no damage or blocked hoses
- canister is dry and not blocked
- definite signs of fuel spills in the past but all dry dust now.

I ran the car with the canister disconnected - breather kicked in and I could feel the suction at the canister end of the hose. Plugged it briefly and not leak could be found... I connected the breather but removed the fuel line and the suction through the canister was there, seemed fine...

Might be worth a new vapour canister since signs of fuel spillage exists but still unsure of the idle surge... is it a MAP issue when the vapor enters the intake?

Pretty much, and of course the vapours are flammable. If the system was compromised itd throw a fault code
I would still check the air hose to the throttle body. Take it off for complete inspection.
Mine has always done this if I drive it hard then sit in traffic for ages. It's very common.

Sure - I’ve done this many times, a clean even. Might be worth a new rubber seal this time too.

I’ve just started having the same issue, has anyone come across a cure for it?
Checked the front map sensor?

Not yet I’m going to try that first see if it stops the chugging
My r53 does the same, sounds and feels like it’s going to stall, a blip on the gas pedal usually clears it.
Exact same as mine seems to be only for a few seconds but I’d rather it not sound like that

That’ll be the least of your problems with a r53

They're a cheap fix, I always changed mine when bought I new MINI as they're known for going out at random times.

Just had a quick look about there seems to be a “t map sensor” or a “map sensor”. I’m assuming it would just be a map sensor, or did you replace both?
I thought that they all did this...
Random idle dips due to the evap purge solenoid releasing fuel tank vapours into the intake? Yep

Mine doesn't do it anymore after I stopped filling the tank up to the top. Someone suggested that in another thread. Sounded silly but after filling couple of times until the first "click", idle problem is gone :confused1:
