Ok guys, new to the site and new to the r53. I bought an 03 r53 with 141k miles a few weeks back for 2k. It needed a new throttle body so i bought it and changed it out and it has run like a champ. Started some mild mods to have some more fun. Msd ignition coil, vms plug wires, 380cc injectors, aem intake, and 1 step colder plugs to compliment the 15% pulley that im going to do. While i was changing out all of these parts, i decided to do an oil change.... Literally had oil draining as i was installing the new parts. Got it all back together and filled with fresh oil, went to clean out the filter housing before installing the cap and filter and guess what ??!! Found plastic pieces and 2 springs sitting inside the housing. Got it all cleared out and let the car sit for 2 days as i tried to call every mini parts specialty shop and salvage yard near me out of desperation. I ordered a new housing from WMW FOR $361 shipped. It was a tough pill to swallow but it was my only option.... IS WHAT I WAS TOLD. After doing some searching for drian back plungers and how they work, what cars use them and seeing that these damn things break all the time, i found what i was looking for. The 6.0 ford powerstroke uses a very similar design. Funny cuz i own one too, just my luck. Found the part number and oreilly carries a dorman version. Picked it up for $12 and compared it to the pieces that i had and it was too close not to give it a shot. Very similar design but the 1" wide spring that was original to the mini plunger was longer than the new dorman one . Installed the plunger with the mini spring and it fit just like how the pictures show the original plunger. Started the car with no issues and gave it some very spirited passes down some curvy roads just to be sure. No issues and no oil pressure light so far. Fingers crossed but I think it will do the job. Not sure yet what to do when the new housing comes in next week.... Hope this helps!

This did not work for me, that plunger is too short by about 8mm, still had low pressure at idle, we are making up an alloy plug the same height as stock which will still have the spring so it raises when filter is removed. Going on two weeks with no car due to this stupid thing, add it to the long list of issues with a car I've had just over a month.

Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know (and anyone else that visits this post) that they are now available on OutMotoring. The new ones are made from Nylon 12 and designed to last longer. They will not become brittle and break, like ABS does when constantly bombarded with high temperature oil. I have been running one in my car since I made them, and I have not experienced any issues, I even tried ripping it out and I could not pull it out. Sorry for the shameless plug, but hopefully this will help the many woes that people have and give some peace of mind.

How is it installed to prevent the filter from ripping it out and breaking as mine did

One post in 2018 & never seen since, don't rate your chances of a reply.

Apart from that sorry for sounding pedantic but the filter doesn't rip it out, ham-fisted removal of the filter could though.

I have changed these & similar filters on many bmw built cars over many years & never had a failure yet.
