R53 Cooper S May 03 EML always coming on and nothing will connect to the OBD port

Hello everyone.

This is my first post on here, having read through some of the other posts I felt I needed to get mine on here, as I'm having trouble with a few things.

I bought my Mini Cooper S, 03 plate August last year. It has only got 87,000 on the clock.

The poor bugger keeps going into Limp mode, this started about November last year. It is much more frequent now, today, it went into Limp mode on my way to work, and then again on my way back.

To start off with, I can not seem to get anything to connect to my OBD port. I have 2 OBDII readers and neither of them will connect, so this is the first issue that I would like help with. As I can not read what my fault codes are to find out the issue that I'm having with my Engine Management Light.

I also don't seem to have any particular driving style or occurances that seem to go hand in hand with the EML coming on. For the first time ever the other day, when my EML came on so did my Traction Control light (which essentially means that turned off!).

I'm completely lost with what to do. I'm not sure if it is even anything to do with my electrics inside the car, as the fuse for the clock in passenger footwell 5 amp seems to keep blowing, it feels like a luxury to have my clock working at the moment! I know this seems like a lot of issues but I absolutely adore my mini and would like to fix her. She is my pride and joy, so any help would be appreciated. Also I don't have the money to take it to the Mini Garage, costs far too much just to get looked at.

Thank you for looking, and hope you can advise!:confused1:

Which readers do you have? If you have an Android, it might be worth buying one of the bluetooth dongles off ebay, along with the Torque app.

obd bluetooth | eBay
The top post on this Ebay listing is one of the ones that I have.

The other one I have tried is a Bluepoint OBDII reader.
sounds like you have water ingress. Maybe your BC1 module is getting moist...

This is the one I have, and it connects fine - Bluetooth Android Torque Car V1.5 ELM327 OBD2 OBDII Diagnostic Code Scanner UK | eBay

Have you tried changing the Bluetooth settings in your app?

Mine used to go into limp mode when the throttle body failed, but there's no use just changing parts, as the car should tell you what's wrong.
The DSC light will come on if there is an engine fault which results in the ECU not being able to calculate load accurately. DSC needs to be sure that a torque down/up request is accurately (therefore safely) carried out - if that can't happen it will shut down.

It could be one of many things.

PM me if you still need help - I don't live far away and could read the fault codes for you.
Does it go into limp mode when being extremely easy on the foot? is the limp mode random?

My car kept going into limp mode due to a faulty bypass valve, whenever i accelerated the car would shut down and go into limp mode...
olimortimer: I've tried changing the bluetooth settings in the app, but still nothing seems to connect.

sef: I will have a look in to the BC1 module, do you know where it is located? And is it near the ECU, or is that the same thing?

edwardtobia: It doesn't seem to have anything that is common, nothing the same seems to be what is setting it off. The only thing I have noticed is that when I boot it, it seems fine, nothing wrong with power, revs perfectly and is rapid. Can't fault the engine... apart from the obvious limp mode issues.

I just can't seem to pin point what is causing it to turn on, especially as my OBD port doesn't take a reading or even connect to anything.
The BC1 is in the drivers side footwell...
Hi, i'm a newby here !!!

I guesss this problem is already solved, because it's some time ago it appears. But to be honoust i have exactly the same !!!
During my Summer holiday in the south of France (beginning of September) after I overtook some cars, my R52 lost all of his power and the Engine Management Light together with EML light went on. I stopped next to the road. After some minutes of engine rest (switch it off) I restarted the engine again. EML light was of Engine light still on but car was running again. Afterwards this problems arise everytime again when i'm asking for (just) a little bit of power.
And the problem is also that it is impossible to connect to the ECU. Bought an ELM 327 wifi interface/connector and use EOBD-Facile Outils app and Dashcommand on an iPad4. In another car (Peugeot 508SW) it's working fine !

Could somebody help me out.
I really don't have any clue about this problem, it's even like this now that an Original BMW dealer doesn't know either. But they could read out my ECU

I'm confused on what's going on with people not being able to connect...
If worst comes to worst get it to the garage and they will be able to put their computer on amd bring up the fault code.

When I first got my r53 I had same problem. Was throttle body in end. Half hour job

Also I have a scan gauge that reads codes, pretty handy

Forgive me if iv got this all wrong or misread
