Noise on pulling away, been told its the fly wheel

Hi there, I've just had my R53 into mini for a diagnosis check on a couple of issues. One of them was a noise when pulling away in first which I was told was the fly wheel. I was in a bit of a rush so didn't get a full explanation of what problems that could cause and how best to fix it or if it's something that can be lived with, can anyone here answer my questions? Thanks, Rich

Hope it's not the flywheel for your sake these are £££ + fitting!!!

What sort of notice is it? Squeak or chatter?
If it's the squeak I would just ignore it, I know it's very loud and annoying but mine has now stopped doing it lol!
What sort of noise is it? Have you checked bushes and engine mounts? Does the noise change upon pressing the clutch when stationary?
Possible clutch Release Bearing ?
Its a squeak that occurs as the clutch is released and engages, pretty much the first few times each drive. Usually goes once everything is warmed up. Clutch bite point hasn't changed and it pulls evenly. The car has been a bit of a pup to be fair and I think had been stood up for a while, most linkages were dry as a bone when I bought it, bonnet release, hinges, steering column etc which became more apparent over time! Not sure if that's any help but any advice would be appreciated, apart from grief from buying a knackered car!!
Best clarify last message, noise only occurs when pulling away in first from a stand still and is worst when cold.

Is it a squeak or is it more like the noise that chewbaca from Star Wars makes? (Best way I can explain it) hahaha. This is what mine done also only from first start up, never did it once warm. I ignored it for 2 years and it's gone.

I've had the same issue on mine (MY06, 70k miles) for a while, and it only happens once or twice after a cold start. I read somewhere that it's quite common on the R53, and that if the clutch is working normally otherwise there's no need to worry... can't find the link now, and it would be nice if someone could confirm this.

Haha... I would say mine is closer to the chewbacca than a squeak. :D

I had this and pulling away up hill in the high street was particularly annoying as people would look at me funny. But somehow it has just disappeared. Have been driving it hard recently maybe that helped lol.
That's a pretty good description, an upset Chewbacca! That's exactly it, I'll persevere with it and hope that it goes, my mileage is just over 70k so it ties in with what you guys are saying. Thank you
If you have 70k on original clutch that's pretty good.

My clutch peddle squeaked every time you put in down, usually the release bearing. I lived with this for a few years, until the clutch started to slip (noticed this only on the motorway and in 6th gear), had the clutch, release bearing and crank oil seal replaced last December at 57k. Its so much easier to drive now and no noise!

What makes the garage think it's the flywheel? Lots of chatter, until you dip the clutch?
^That's what I recall reading a while back.

Are there any downsides to the non-dual mass flywheel (besided NVH)?
It's just noisier than a dual mass one and the pick up will be a lot sharper. A single mass one spins up faster too as less rotational mass.

I think i might have this
i doesn't sound like chewbacca, sounds like brake squeek so i thought it was a warped disc, but it only does it on pulling away not coasting to a stop, so this would make more sense

The same happens to me also, not a problem and it is common to the R53.

Ive had the same issue on mine for the past 5 months or so and nothing has come about of it. It is a common fault on the R53 mini.....like been descibed it is known as the chewbacca noise and from what ive seen around it is due to the flywheel....not up for spending the £££ to change it at the moment to solve the noise. it only happens mostly when she is still cold.

hope this helps
