Hi to the Forum,

I wanted to show my project, to keep the modded r56 alive.

After running two years and 60k km the manic stage 2 with 270hp, it was time to get an upgrade. Inspired by Themis, I went the 308 GTi Road.

In the following weeks iam going to tear the engine apart and install all the aftermarket parts.

Current car:
Mini r56 JCW 2008
Stock engine, 149k km, no oil consumption, full compression
Current output: 271hp and 400 Nm

Mod list:
-Maxpeedingsrods connecting rods
-new Mahle Piston Rings
-supertech valve Springs
-arp head bolts
-cometic race gasket, 1.3mm- compression around 9.7:1 instead of 10.0:1
-308 GTi turbo, upgraded by Ladermanufaktur aka pnp-turbos
-308 GTi exhaust manifold
-308 GTi blowoff system
-catch cans
-custom Air intake, self build 3d printed air box (if it works?)
-braided oil hose
-hpfp solution (if it works?)
-upgrade injectors from the GM 2.0t engine
-3 inch downpipe and exhaust system
-slight head work

I still don't know which tune iam going to get? Manic is dead, and there is no one in Germany capable or has enough experience in tuning minis.

If you have any suggestions, please comment.

I will keep you updated.

Nice choice there. I reassure you won’t regret it.
Do you know the spec of the wheels and how pnp rate the turbo?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
They didn't tell me the exact specs. They rate it around 300+ hp. They said the power depends on the setup and they can't tell exactly how much power it will produce, as it is their first turbo of this kind. They told me they upgraded the bearings, because the original ones would definitely not handle the additional flow.

Some of the specs I found out.

Intake is around 46mm, so the compressor wheel would be something like 45mm on the small side. I didn't take it apart to check the big side.

Reinforced shaft with a 9 blade 50 to 45mm turbine without cutback.

I think it should be able to flow 350-360hp.

A first Baseline health check shows, even if the engine ist abused, if you take care of it it's going to stay healthy.

Removing the old turbo and manifold revealed some nasty cracks....

If you could find one manifold without a crack it would be a miracle. on the other side these cracks dont mean nothing. Even with heat they dont expand so much and turbo keeps spooling problem free.

Cracks or not the I can't wait for the replacement parts to be built in.

Whats with the castings in the inlet ports?
They are horrible... The oil deposits sit I between the casting and the valve reducing the diameter. In the second picture i worked on one of the inlet ports. Iam quite happy with the look of it. Also the valves need some hardcore cleaning. The finish looks like those swirl polished ones. Those deposits came after 45k km. I hope that the two catch cans are going to minimize the deposits.

News from the cylinder head... The valve Guides and the exhaust valves needed replacing. The exhaust valves were stretched and the valve Guides were way out of the tolerances.

Supertech inconel valves are going to replace the old BMW ones.

The new valve Guides are going to be custom made out of bronze.

My ecu programmer suggested that an afr gauge would be necessary to monitor the afr in real time in case something happens.

Finding the right place for gauges in the mini isn't that simple, especially if you are going for a clean look.

So I designed and printed an adapter for the outer air vent.

An AEM Afr gauge is going to fill the space in the vent.

The head has also returned from the machine shop. New valve guides, new surface and freshly cut valve seats, plus the lapped original intake valves and the new supertech exhaust valves.
