I live up north and the condition of the roads around here is pretty awful. I have a 2007 R56 Cooper S running on 17" rims. Tyres are 205/45 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3's all round. While I loved the general handling of the car on smooth tarmac, like most owners I found the ride to be unacceptably harsh on broken surfaces, with the car easily unsettled by mid-corner bumps.

When a front damper failed catastrophically I decided to bite the bullet and fit a set of Koni FSDs all round. Three months in my only regret is that I wish I had done so earlier. FSDs are not cheap but are they are worth every penny. They can't deny the laws of physics (it's still a firmly sprung short wheelbase car) but they have transformed the ride on broken surfaces, potholes and sleeping policemen, softening the brittle sting on first impact, and the car no longer hops sideways on mid-corner bumps. The high speed handling seems unaffected. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Tom.
