Hi guys..

For a while now ive had a knocking noise from the front lower right of the car.. ive inpsected and changed a fair bit to try and solve this ive had a mate at MINI look at this and still cannot solve it ive give up buying parts as ive spent a fair bit..

It only occurs when i have it in first gear and take of the it knocks a few times after that not much at all until im slowing and have my foot on the brake.

Ive changed..

Off side drive shaft
Steering rack with rack ends and track ends
droplinks
bottom powerflex engine mount was ripped so that got changed

I did have some tein coilovers on but one was leaking so got eibachs and standard suspension back on to eliminate them

I had a facelift box on but had a few problem's now the old box is back on..

I have new R56 Brembos on after this started

Different wheels on

There is no play in the wheel at all, i have no wobbling on the steering wheel since the spacers have gone..

Any other ideas would be a great help :)

Have you just tried rocking the engine?

Front wishbone bush ?

I'm trying to think what would 'jerk/release ' when you slow down --
Does the wheel hub spin nice and free ?

I have rocked the engine yes and no play at all last time i did it the noise is getting worse now but i can only replicate the noise when driving so its difficult to locate..

The hub rotates fine yes but ill check all these again over the weekend..

The front of the car is fully poly bushed too..

The only other things i can think of is the strut top mount as that has a bearing in but this seems to high from where the noises "Seems" to be coming from...

Also the lower outer ball joint but this is not to old also as ive recently changed everything on the front of the car most things never needed changing but i got carried away when stripping the box of and changed a few more things than needed..

This noise was there when i changed these parts and never went away too...

If the outer ball joint was buggered i would have movement top to bottom on the alloy????

Cheers :)

I had a similar problem to this but it was the screws had fallen out of the skid panel and was causing a knocking sound when going slowly after a bump.

Thats not his issue ^^^ as he has had a very good investigation . Its a point I'm sure he has looked at though . My thoughts are - why was lower mount buggered ? Possible that the gearbox mount is bust ?

Possible top strut mount? When mine went the knocking could sound like it was coming from somewhere else.

Ive had problems with my input shaft seal leaking when i changed from pre facelift to facelift box and its been off 5 times also my ultrik flywheel failed and bits rattled round and demolished the box casing so that was another reason for it to be pulled apart..

On that... i think thats why its ripped as im always working on axle stands at home and to get the subframe back up it gets jacked up and ive caught the side of the poly flex mount as im going up...

Weather is poo too so not looking under this wknd :(

Think ill be changing the outer ball joint first as thats cheaper then maybe swap the strut top mounts around before buying one see if the noise changed sides..

Cheers for the help :)

If you've had a lot of gearbox/ shaft issues maybe the diff bearings aren't on far enough ? You sound like you are handy with a spanner . When they get pressed on by some methods they don't sit all the way on flush with the diff . I can only assume the bearings have the preload already factored in as we don't have to shim the LSD on a mini . That may transmit a noise and cause seal failures ??

The problems with the seal was originally a worn one as the box had been sat for about a year... then i bought one from a seal specialist which i got an explanation that this one is much better than the BMW one, then it went again i thouhgt i fitted it wrong so got another and the same thing..

I then took the whole box to a specialist to have it put together by someone them with a new seal then it went again straight away.. the last time i bought a seal from BMW and fiited it myself and now its fine..

The box was stripped by me to check things internally then i took it to the specialist who put it back together...

IMO it does sound like a drive shaft issue as that is where it sounds like its from...

Ive had 2 boxes on and 2 drive shafts on and its still there.. this O/S shaft is now a new one...

Ill get a recording or vid of the sound as it is quiet loud when i take off but the car is bloody loud to and with needin more revs to get going because of the flywheel that'l probably drown it out..

a knock noise from the front right of the engine is extremley common that it is the engine mount. but one way to tell is put the hand brake on and dip the clutch in gear 1, then reverse straight after kind of rock back and forth and repeat (this creates the nock noise clearly if its the mount) and have someone listen round the front and it should be obvious

Is it a knock or a clunk ?

If you are running the factory JCW Brembo brakes & running Carbotech pads (or other aftermarket pads) you will probably be hearing them moving back and forward (I used to get it with mine when 1st taking off - no effect on the braking though).

i get hte same..thoguht it was the driveshaft at first but its not..

the carbotech pads move inside the caliper so when going from reverse to fwd drive or vice versa you get a knock/clunk as Steve described above ;)

nothing to worry about

Thanks for the replys....

Ive changed my engine mount from the facelift oil filled one to the pre facelift solid one and that seems fine..

Im running R56 brembos with standard pads in, the noise happens everytime i take off in first gear or slow down ive not noticed it when i reverse at all.. ive never heard it when i driving at all only on take off and slowing down.

Ive just removed my aircon pump and fitted the BMW Pulley in place and ive noticed the small rubber bush on the supercharger damper is virtually gone in shreds.... i think this could be the problem when the revs pick up to take off in 1st the pulley tensions up and creates a knock as the rubber bush aint there...

Do you think this could be happening??

Ill be changing this and seeing what happens anyway.... Will the brake pad knock happen wit standard pads?

When I ran standard pads on my Brembos, there was no movement (only after going to XP8s).

You can pick up the powerflex supercharger damper inserts (i've just had them done on mine), worth doing anyway (another thing to eliminate!)

Good luck finding the noise.

With this awesome sledging weather ive not had chance to check the car at all im awaiting delievery of the supercharger bushes ill get them on and see..

On another note could a wheel bearing make a knocking noise?... I was stuck going up an incline in the snow the other day behind another car.. i got traction an they never started to over take and the veered to the right an i ended up hitting the curb in my newly refurbed Dare X4's.... since then my wheel bearing is whuuring..

Just thought if its been on the way out and knocking then now its had a bump and got worse..?

Cheers.
