Clutch bite point (again)

Hi all,

Newbie here, first post. :)

I decided to revisit my old hot hatch days and picked up a 54 plate Cooper S.

The clutch bite point is right down at the floor - I have to press the pedal to the bulkhead and the bite point is an inch or two above that.

I see that there are several threads on this subject about the internet, but I thought I'd ask again - everyone seems to consider that the bite point should be at the top of the pedal when the clutch is worn. I don't think the clutch on my car has been changed because it doesn't look as though any major work has been don e on the car.

What is going on to cause the bite point to be at the bottom of the pedal travel? We're going to investigate the hydraulics but the pedal does feel 'right' and consistent and the bite point never changes though pumping the pedal or anything like that.

Can anyone shed light please, on why the clutch bite point is right down near the floor?

Many thanks.

Mine is close to the top with 212 000 km on the original clutch.

Thanks. My car is on 100,000 miles / 160000kms. I guess it's time to suspect an issue with the clutch hydraulics.

I've had my 05 Cooper S on 135k miles a week or so and my clutch is the same. Hasn't concerned me really, I'd rather it be way down than at the top, but if there's an underlying issue and they're not meant to be like that then I'd like to know aswell!
Hi guys, thanks,

We decided to have a bleed of the clutch system and then spent several hours trying to get back to where we started, eventually replacing the slave cylinder.

After using the Mini Mania method of clamping the cylinder and leaving the clutch pedal depressed over night, we believe we are now back to where we started with the bite point an inch off the bulkhead, although I haven't driven the car yet.

I would like to sort this, as this is spoiling the car. It is giving the gear change a really clunky, ill-sorted nature and is just spoiling the drive. Also, I'd like to be able to have my wife drive this car as her daily, but I know she won't put up with this problem.

Has anybody any other thoughts or suggestions?

Could be the clutch release bearing failing... is it making any noises at idle with the clutch pedal down? Or maybe something wrong with the clutch release fork (bent/cracked)? I'm assuming the slave cylinder bracket is not broken as you probably would've noticed it while replacing the cylinder...
