Can a BC1 be straight swapped?

I've got a '05 R52 JCW which all works fine apart from the remote locking. I've had it into an indie who reckons the keys are fine, but the Body control unit is at fault. Rather than spend £400 on a new one (mebbe just to find the receiver is at fault) I've got a 2nd hand one from a '05 r53 for £20 off fleabay - can it be swapped in and then the keys programmed by the ignition on/off hold buttons down etc, or does the new BC1 have to be assigned by an autologic or summat?

Would it do any harm to swap it in and test?

any help really appreciated.

Just for remote locking, I replaced mine with a new one and everything worked except central locking / aircon and heated rear window . The central locking worked from the key in the door just not remotely . I was then told If I got a 2nd hand one from a car with aircon that would work as well .

that's good to know - Mine's got the climate control so I'm guessing I may have issues with that and the heated front screen, but as long as the car will start that will be good. Also mines a convertible and I'm guessing the donor BC1 is from a r53 so that might scupper some things too..

Old thread, but... a mate with a 2003 R53 replaced a bad BC1 with a used one, and everything is working now except for the sunroof. That I think can be sorted with NCS expert. A bigger problem is that the traction control light is on and clearing the fault code gives an error about a wrong VIN. Is it possible to change the VIN in the BC1?

Thats correct, I just came her to comment that yes they are a direct swap but the VIN must be matched onto the replacement. Not sure if NCS will do this, but NCS will certainly be able to correct the settings to match fitted options. I know WinkFP can do things like VIN coding, but things like the clocks and ews cannot be recoded without removing the onboard chip but i know the BC1 can

Version 5, navigate on to the module and you will see along the bottom of the screen there is an option to code the module in. Mine is quite change now since the original - failing that it is easy enough to do it through NCS

Its been a while since I last coded in a module on the R53. As long as you have NCS you can always;
Using expert mode read the ZCS and select the "BC1" ECU for coding. The job is quick and doesn't take too long.

My mini is running modules from all eras and models and this is all I did to keep it coded

My 2004 R53 has failed its MOT on all indicators not functional, local vehicle electronics specialist has diagnosed faulty body control unit! i can get a matching partnumber one for cheap from fleabay, can I just plug it in and the indicators will work to pass MOT? and i can worry about getting keys etc programmed later? also, whats this NCS software? i already have a wifi obd adaptor for my other car, is this something I should know about? i presume i can only get the keys linked to replacement bc1 by someone with hardware/software for key programming? Thanks.
