103550

103551

103552

103553

going to keep this one standard..........

although an aero kit, G wing, remap, black alloys, coilovers etc would look nice (Joking!!)

already bought a cooper S spoiler for it!

this is part of the ebay description....

story is were selling this on behalf of a customer/friend of ours who has bought a new car
we've had it through our workshop and have serviced it including changing the gearbox oil.
we replaced the driver side suspension leg and both rear legs, drop links and anti roll bar bushes

car drives fantastic

bodywork is really clean has a few minor scratches and stone chips to be expected for a car its age

interior is in good shape driver seat is showing the usual wear on the bolsters but everything works as is should

its a clean little car and been well looked after not a single thing wrong with it. the owner really cared for the car

v5 present

.......lots of work done already

if its a dog at least ive got some rear trailing arms and spare brakes for the R53

Never thought about the fuel cap!

been looking at TDI tuning’s tuning box, like a bluefin type thing, there is one used on eBay that they can reprogram that will give it an extra 30bhp, takes it to 140bhp with 40 ‘more torques’ I’m going to see how it runs for a bit and might look at fitting one of those to it for a bit more go

of course I’ve looked at things to swap the stereo out for a double din, they do a proper kit for this one

until I get it then I’m not going to start spending in case it’s rubbish (apart from the spoiler I’ve already got as it came up really cheap compared to others!)

it will be having a trip over to your house Sean so you can run your diagnostics on it for me

Just sent a pic of new car to a guy in work who’s into his minis and he replied with, “I used it have one of those” and “when I sold it I took all the modded bits off and they are gathering dust in the garage, xenon hall lights, Union Jack rear lights, strut brace if you want them cheap”

oh dear, this may be a dear do

Phoned up Adrien flux earlier to get it insured as an extra car on the multi car policy I have for the Cooper S and Touareg and they spoke to the underwriters who said due to the value and the fact it’s NOT modified they wouldn’t insure it!

I go them to quote me with a TDI tuning chip fitted and they willthat, so I’ve been forced into modifying the car, ok it didn’t take much arm twisting and it was something I thought about but insurance would be an issue, didn’t think it would be the other way round though!

collecting it this afternoon from Birmingham, going to head down on the train and have a walk to the garage from the station to get my steps in For the day then head straight to work from there (it’s only 3 mile from there)

Joking apart I sold a load of model railway stuff at night that I’ve had in my display cabinets what made me £800 on eBay so yes the car has only cost me £400 out of my pocket!

as for the tax, discovered it’s not £30 a year but £20, result, I ended up driving it back from Birmingham to home (and I’ll drive my hire car back later to work) and it got this much average MPG.....it even came with 3/4 of a tank of fuel showing 320 mile range left!

So initial impressions, a different car to the R53, quiet and comfy but still fairly nippy too, be interesting to see how it goes with the chip on

It’s very tidy, been well looked after that’s for sure, one of the rear window belt line trims is loose but there is a brand new one on the back seat to fit

Only bodywork issue I can see is this little ding on the boot

As for the Cooper rear bumper, it appears that to fit that the previous owner had an exhaust made to fit, a bit of a pea shooter with a Halfords trim on the end! Not loud though, it may be something I look at swapping for a standard SD exhaust one day if one comes up cheap

It’s had new suspension struts and drop links on the rear as well as ARB bushes

they have also done a front suspension arm so I think it will need the tracking done as the wheel isn’t straight (the pic is actually a bit further across than when it’s moving)

Engine wise, seems tidy enough, only one black cloud when I initially booted it after it had no doubt been sat round for a while but nothing when I did it again on the motorway

The garage said they have only done basic servicing on it but seem to think it may have had a new turbo not too long ago too

As for the car itself, it’s got a lot of toys to be fair, I was going to do a head unit swap but I’ve discovered it’s got DAB and aux in (wherever that’s located) and it looks to have a factory hands free but I’ll need to see how that is set up

Auto lights, heated front screen, aircon, auto wipers too

The seats need a bit of a clean on the white leather bits but other than that, really pleased with it

definite work to do:
air con regas
Tracking
Tuning chip fitting

things I’m probably going to change/add:
Exhaust for a proper factory one
Headlights (if my workmate gives me a good price for his xenons)
Taillights (if I like the look of them)
Side scuttle and indicators (again from workmate)
Front Grille centre bars for a black type
Spoiler for Cooper s type (on its way already)

maybe de chrome the beltline but keep chrome around the headlights and grille and rear boot handle

im Actually tempted to go back to work in it later rather than take the hire car I have

And so it begins, going full on tightwad on this car!

a trawl of Amazon marketplace netted me a k&n replacement filter for some bizarre American car is never heard of but the dimensions were pretty much ok for the mini give or take a few MM
103570

it’s not quite long enough by about 3mm each end when placed in the bottom of the airbox
103571

however once married up with the top it is absolutely perfect, no way any dirt can get up the side of the filter to the clean side
103572

And all for a princely £6 for the filter!

Defiantly having the other bits off my work mate too, angel eye headlights, Union Jack tail lights, clear repeaters, pedal boost chip and an authentic JCW strut brace, all for less than the cost of the rear lights of I were to buy them new on eBay!

noticed a few clips are broken on the front grille surround so I may have to get one of those too (or an aero grille!)

Managed to get a look at the quality exhaust while I was getting the tracking done earlier (which they couldn’t do as the track rod ends were seized) and its sure a quality piece of kit, something Bentley would be proud of!

quite simply it a piece of mild steel pipe welded to what looks likepart of the original front end of the standard exhaust running straight through to the rear, no res box and I wasn’t joking when I said it wa as Halfords tail pipe end!

thing is it works, isn’t at all noisy and looks ok from the back but at some point I’ll most likely get a custom made exhaust on it with a resonating box as I can’t imagine a straight through piece of scaffolding isn’t helping the turbo back pressure, I could look at a Cooper SD exhaust but they are for 2l cars and the manifold may be further forward or back on the 1.6 car so it may not fit, similarly the Cooper diesel exhaust will fit the manifold but it’s a side exit type so won’t fit the bumper, another option is an amalgamation of the two types

It’s also had its heat shield removed so I’ll look at putting that back on if I can find the bits cheap enough

most importantly I’ve got an aero grille and OEM mini spotlights for it, got to have it looking good if nothing else

Ended up getting a used standard Cooper D exhaust for the car, will have to change the bumper though for a side exit type, I also managed to get the cat for it too off the same seller so it will have a standard exhaust set up once I get it on

it’s what in the mini world is known as “doing a pipsyp” I take mods off the car!

the chip tuner has arrived, ready to be sent off to be reprogrammed for my car as well as the beltline de chrome and Cooper S spoiler so they will be going on to keep the balance of the universe in tow, for every mod removed one must be refitted!

I’ve had to dump that lot in the mess room at work as it was all in a hire car, going to collect it tomorrow, hopefully get the car on some ramps on Sunday as it’s my day off and see if I can get the exhaust off, if I can then I’ll also swap the bumper over

as for the other boxes in the boot this is what I’ve got to fit

rear lights
103623

front lights
103624

LED driving lights/fog lights
103626

LED indicators
103627

sprint booster
103628

JCW strut brace
103629

103630

and then when I got home a parcel was here from eBay, black door handle covers
103631

and off Amazon a Bluetooth adapter which plugs into the aux port so I can stream from the iPhone to the stereo, a bargain at £6 that one!

Right here we go.......

today was the day to try and get all the bits on the car, started about 8:30 and got a good days work done!

here is the car as it looked the start of the day

Started with the simple jobs, front lights first

Then the side repeaters

JCW strut brace

Then it was off with the bumper to see if I could do anything with the exhaust

as you can see it’s top notch!

Then once I was sure I could do something with it i ramped up the front of the car to get to the manifold bolt

I then wd40d the rubber holders for lubrication and yanked the exhaust from the back and it slid off the hangers very easily, in all fairness I could have talked it down it was that loose!

It was then on with the new exhaust

And Cooper bumper

That lot only took me about an hour and a half, was expecting it to take longer, next up, back to a simple job, rear lights

I’m going to retain the chrome around the headlights and taillights as well as the grill (which will be going black)

Then it was the sprint boost button, plugs into the accelerator pedal and has the button on the dash, similar experience to the ones I had in the Cooper and convertible

Then the one job I was going to put off as I didn’t fancy taking the bumper off but I thought, what the hell ive got plenty of time left

Daylight running lights, you may notice the chrome ring is missing, I’ve taken it off to plasticote it black

They are wired together and an extra loom runs to the battery, when the lights of off you get bright running lights but when the lights come on they dim down

And there we (almost) have it, still waiting to fit the spotlight rings, I’ve also got a black grille on order, I’ve been looking for some brackets for the spotlights and I discovered mini do a kit with the brackets, plastic grille back and gloss black clip on slats so I’m going to order one of those as it’s cheaper than I trying to get brackets and an aftermarket black grille on eBay!

On the rear I’ve got a black boot handle cover on the way too

By the end of the week I should have the tuning chip back too with any luck

Just so the R53 didn’t feel left out I took it out for a drive while the R56 was on the ramps!

Took to out for a proper spin this morning taking my lad to work, it certainly goes well for a standard car so it should be pretty good once the chip is fitted, the sprint booster make a bit of difference too as it is now

it’s a different drive to the S as it’s not a plant your foot down and watch it go kind of car but it pulls really well just driving It sensibly and with no aggression

I think I need to adjust the headlights a bit as they seems to be pointing a bit low when I came back from work in it last night, and one of the high beam bulbs has blown too so I need to take the light out to replace that.

ordered the black grille last night so hopefully that will arrive tomorrow so I can get that fitted along with the spotlights, got to rub down the blacked off bumper spotlight rings as there are a few runs on them, going to do that in a bit

Black fog light rings back in place
103647

I think the headlights need adjusting in the brackets before I adjust the screws on them as they are a bit off centre in regard the chrome ring
103648

this one is pointing outwards

Had the exhaust not been so comical then I’d have got an aero bumper and put a diffuser on it but it was only fit for the scrap man

the TDI tuning box is on its way back so hopefully have that by Friday (if not tomorrow), what sort of power are you gettibg From your remap and does it make a big difference?

I’m not doing anything engine wise to this apart from putting the cat back on as it’s been tampered with, this is my commute car so want to keep the MPG up and if I want a thrash I can take the R53 out

I was thinking about changing the wheels though and maybe a G wing but on the same hand I do like the understated stealth look it’s got now with the minimal mods
