Using another 433 from a different mirror looks good

Yeah I've seen another post suggesting that the only difference with the R56 mirror is the different frequency locking module and that swapping them over is the only additional step...though of course means having to disect the mirror.

On NAM lots of people have put the homelink mirrors with auto dim in their facelifts that had no mirror functionality before and was all plug and play too so the confidence level is there (I doubt the wiring on NA cars is that different if any to ours in terms of interior). I also have a funny feeling that back then the auto dim mirror was available as a standalone option so betting the wiring was there to ease installation at the factory.

Keeping my fingers crossed (for us both) it works mate, sure it will.

Genuinely dont worry too much about the mirror marking. If you happen to have a solid but small trim tool that might do the job but I just used a small flat blade electrical screwdriver and it was fine. All it does is leave v small ridges on the edges of the plastic where the two pieces meet.. mainly from the minor levering you have to do to pop the clips. If you take your time and are careful the residual marking is little to none.

I'm massively OCD and it hasnt bothered me just thought it was a point worth mentioning to save anyone particularly hamfisted getting upset that they'd buggered their mirror housing by levering that crap out of it😂 ....It's really nothing at all and nothing you would notice so long as you go slow and careful (y)

So Maccmike is sorting me out with his last PU Engine Mount.

Decided to give up on the Vibratechnics option as it just seemed alot of money for what it is.....also this allows for VT type improvement whilst retaining a mostly OE look and for alot less cost....seemed a no brainer! Also have had a bit of a costly month with the stupid bloody Ford I own failing its first MOT so not having to shell out 180 quid on a bit of rubber and metal is most welcome!

Thanks ever so much once more Mike, you are a gent (y)

Belt tensioner arrived. As mentioned previously the INA part is just the OE Litens part with the OE part number grinded off. Not bad for 51 quid (y)

bargain especially when a certain tuning specialist charged me £90 for just the shock absorber/damper part of the tensioner

annoyingly I had a Complete tensioner assembly like that before I had the cooper S when I bought a 2nd hand alternator for the R52 and the seller included it in the sale, stupidly, gave it away when I sold the alternator on again (it was the wrong one)

Damn it that's annoying!

This is the one I got...was a further discount on it at the time. Came very quickly no complaints

Well mirror has arrived, though upon opening it up the confidence level has dropped somewhat.......

So whereas my car has three wires.....this thing has 9! It appears that 9 of 10 of the pins in the 10 pin connector are used and that both the locking and auto dim circuits have their own independent circuits (dont share a circuit internally) so am thinking this is not going to be plug and play.

If so, something I am considering is if the locking works, seeing if I can cut and splice the wires on the mirror circuit to give it 12v and presumably ground from the locking circuit. Would mean the thing is on all the time but if it worked I wouldn't be overly bothered, not bothered about the reverse sensing either.

Going to see if I can get any info on the pinouts but if anyone knows anything already appreciate some steer (y)

The apparent pin outs and where they end up harness to mirror if it is of interest to anyone.

Interestingly have had a scan of eBay...found a 2004 facelift mirror from an R52 and it seems that also has an 8 or 9 wire loom so no doubt the same thing.

Can only hope that somehow the three existing loom wires are split somehow to provide enough connectivity for both circuits in the mirror.....is bizarre as on NAM many people suggest it's all just plug and play but I guess its possible their wiring looms differed to ours???? That said I have read elsewhere that the R56 mirror minus the locking module is plug and play on the R53 facelift and although there are less wires it's enough to power it all up........

Again anyone that has a factory dimming mirror if they fancy taking it off to check the wiring out underneath be very grateful (y) (y)

Well...this might actually have mileage.....

By the looks of it the mirror itself only needs 12v and the locking two wires for signal and power. If it is these three wires that are pre-populated in the loom (as they need to be) then were laughing.

I can only assume a car that's factory fitted for it may well have some other things going on (the reverse disabling most notably) but if it powers up OK and the locking works off the bat once the modules are swapped that really will be happy days.

Am out this evening so probably wont get a chance to piss about with it until tomorrow night but will update soonest where we are. If it doesnt work as planned may have to go back to the drawing board or abandon all hope 🤣

Good investigative work, hopefully it will prove fruitful, I don’t actually know what mirror I have I’ll have a look when I pop out shortly, assume it’s auto dimming if it doesn’t have the manual toggle on the back?

Cheers m8 will keep all posted on progress. I'm hopeful but if it comes to cutting/splicing/running wires to get the basics running I'll probably call time on it as not that desperate for it...let's hope it doesnt come to that 👍

Mirror wise assuming it looks much the same but instead of the dipping knob has a small diode in the bottom of the base at the front it's an auto dimming one.

There are people on eBay selling manual mirrors as auto dimming which is a bit naughty....also at this point I'd recommend just going with an R56 mirror as they seem to be cheaper for some reason (in greater supply I suppose) and you're guaranteed of getting a facelift mirror. Some of the pics on eBay for R50/R53 versions are so bad you cant tell whether they are pre FL or not in some cases (the only tell takes being the slightly different bracket and three wire loom). Also the R52's dont fit the R50 or R53 as the mounting is different....expect you could convert one by removing the innards/wiring and swapping the mounting bracket over (by separating the ball joint from the mirror housing) but seems like alot of graft for no good reason (unless you happen to accidentally buy an R52 mirror of course!).

.....fuck it must be the heat or something but I've made a bit of a mistake above 🤣 🤣

So there is 8 live pin wires in the loom that connects to the car....but there are 9 wires internally.....two brown one to each of the modules which indicates a split ground wire.

I'm quietly confident that the wiring from the car will provide switched 12v to the mirror circuit, fixed 12v and signalling to the RF receiver and ground both out on the shared wire. We'll see but would make sense to me if thay were the case.

If I'm wrong, after nearly 4 months no alcohol I might just start again 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The mirror in my R53 has no wires!

The remote sensor module is in the roof. I remember seeing it when I took the roof liner out last year.

.....so I have a feeling this is going to fail somewhat.

I've checked the wiring and it looks like pins 2, 8 and 10 are wired up which I believe are for the locking (2 & 8) and ground wiring (10).

I reckon when the mirror goes in the locking will work but betting the dimming mirror wont. Wondering if a suitable 12v feed can be pulled from one of the locking wires within the mirror (so jumpered) or from the map reading light panel? Any pointers anyone feel free to Holla!

If it turns out the brown wire is a 12v live somehow it'll probably work.......anyones guess!!

Well the one plug in the R56 mirror fits an R53 circuit board.. dunno if the wires are correctly going where they are supposed to go.
